The Myth: Shifting to neutral when the car is at a stop saves gas.
The Truth: Vehicles today are designed with computerized fuel-injection systems. These system sense if a car is revving above idle as you take your foot off of the accelerator. The fuel-injectors actually shut off and stop injecting gas into the engine. All you are doing by shifting in and out of neutral is wearing down the shift components.

The Myth: As the vehicle gets older, gas mileage decreases.
The Truth: If you fail to take your vehicle in for proper routine maintenance, then yes your vehicle will decrease in performance and in fuel economy. However, if you properly maintain and repair your vehicle over the years, you shouldn't see a major decrease in fuel economy at all!

The Myth: Cruise control saves gas.
The Truth: Keeping your vehicle at a constant speed with cruise control may save you fuel while driving on the highway; otherwise, it could have the opposite effect. The sudden acceleration that cruise control creates when your car is driving up an incline burns a lot of fuel. It burns the same amount of gas if you were to slam down on the accelerator yourself.

The Myth: Filling up the tank at the coldest part of the day = more gas.
The Truth: It is true that at colder temperatures, liquids are denser and take up less space. People think this means they would get a larger volume of gas into their tank. Unfortunately, this is not true. Gasoline is kept at a constant temperature in an insulated storage tank. Even if there was the slightest change in temperature, you would see any noticeable savings.

The Mustang Fills Role as the Perfect "Hero Car"

FLUSHING, Mich - There has been much anticipation for the upcoming film "Need for Speed" based off of the long-running video game series from Electronic Arts. In just two weeks, the film will hit theaters and debut the latest pony car for the very first time on the big screen. Director, Scott Waugh, stated that the Mustang fills role as the perfect "Hero Car" and the best representation of American culture; exactly what the main character in the movie, Toby Marshall, needed.

Ford Celebrates 80th Anniversary of the Aussie Ute

FLUSHING, Mich - Ford Celebrates 80th Anniversary of the Aussie Ute, the iconic truck that led to the development of the F-Series and Ranger vehicles that we know and love today. The first Ford Ute is a major part of Ford's heritage that has led to several iconic vehicles and truck leadership around the world.

Let's take a trip back to 1933, when Hubert French, the managing director of Ford Motor Company of Australia, received a letter from a farmer's wife. The letter stated that the couple couldn't afford two vehicles, but needed something they could use to drive to church as well as for farm related purposes. Hubert French worked with young designer, Lewis Bandt, who created a sketch with a coupe body and pickup sides. Combining both a clean profile and plenty of room to load items behind the cabin. 

A few adjustments came along the way. Bandt added a wooden-framed utility section in place of their rear luggage compartment, making for a more smooth-sided vehicle. Just like that, the Ford Ute became the "must have" vehicle in rural areas and 22,000 were sold between 1950 and 1954. Bandt's coupe utility was a first for Ford Australia and quickly mad a large impact on the Australia auto industry. It paved the way for what we now know as some of the world's most popular vehicles or better know as the Pickup or utility. The original Ute also spawned the Falcon Ute; a vehicle that Ford Australia has sold more than 455,000 of! 

Ford Celebrates 80th Anniversary of the Aussie Ute, the vehicle that is accountable for much of the success Ford Motor Company has seen in the year 2013. Without the original idea of the Ford Ute many years ago, the Ford Series would not have become the best-selling vehicle in the history of the pickup truck industry. It may also not have been the world's best-selling truck for the 37th consecutive year.

Ford China Begins 2014 With a Strong Start

FLUSHING, Mich - Ford China did not waste a second of time, heading into 2014 at full speed ahead. Ford China beings 2014 with a strong start as wholesales reached 94,466; a whopping 53 percent growth. Thanks to many sales of some fine automobiles, Ford China is starting a new year with some big numbers on the board.

Ford China passenger cars alone accounted for 72,598 of the vehicles sold. This is a massive 63 percent increase compared to sales in January 2013. The Ford Focus lead in growth as it continues to please consumers with its sleek design, safety features, fuel efficiency, and latest technology. Sales for the nameplate reached 36,358 cars in January, up eight percent from last year. According to IHS Automotive, the Focus was named the top selling nameplate in the passenger vehicle market in China throughout 2013. The Ford Mondeo nameplate was another high demand vehicle; 10,704 cars sold made for a 51 percent increase from last year.

Ford Tortures 2015 Ford F-150 With the Help of Beefy Men

FLUSHING, Mich. - The Ford F-150 is known for providing drivers with impressive towing capabilities and durable materials. However, Ford wants to improve upon the interior of the 2015 Ford F-150 to make sure it is 'Built Ford Tough' along with the rest of the vehicle. To do this, Ford has taken to torturing the 2015 Ford F-150 with the help of beefy men - seriously.

While there is no specific type of person that gets behind the wheel of a F-150, it is typically the vehicle of choice for contractors and other professions that use the truck as part of their job. To make sure that the interior of the truck is as hard working as the people that drive it, Ford has employed heavier-set men to test the durability of the F-150's leather-wrapped truck seats. These men dress in their dirtiest jeans for the period of 10 days and are paid to climb into the driver's seat, get down, and climb up again around 10,000 times per truck.

After this unique form of testing, Ford designers were able to improve upon the leather seating to make it more durable. The 2015 Ford F-150's seats will now be made of higher-strength steel and tougher leather that weigh a combined 30 pounds less than the current seats - this makes the improved seats able to withstand even the beefiest, grimiest of drivers!

Ford Designer & Modeler's Unique Communication Tool

FLUSHING, Mich - Rummaging through your desk drawer or cupboard at home, you may come across Ford Designer and Modeler's Unique Communication Tool: Tape. Yes, we said tape. Believe it or not, tape is a critical tool used throughout the design process of all Ford cars and trucks.

The design process takes time, creativity, and persistency from start to finish. After an initial sketch, a scaled down-clay model and 3D CAD drawing are produced, tape comes into play. A full-size clay vehicle is created to analyze the body styling options. Tape allows designers to  show modelers the lines they want on the vehicle. In order to for the car to look proportionate, the structural lines must be just right. 

Tape brings a level of precision to the design process that can't be duplicated on a computer. It is flexible and can be retaped over and over again until the designers find the perfect concave and convex angles. Tape also keeps the integrity of the width of the line; which is very important when drawing a line that may be difficult to keep at a consistent size. 

Long before such advanced technology, tape was used to draw the entire vehicle because it was the first opportunity to see a full-size vehicle on a 1:1 scale. Today, tape is used primarily on clay models. Although tape's original role has been altered over time, Ford is still using 155 miles of tape a year!

Ford Makes Generous Donation to Michigan Science Center

FLUSHING, Mich - Being supporters of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, known to some as STEM education, Ford Motor Company made a generous donation to the Michigan Science Center. The Ford Motor Company Fun donated $400,000 to the Detroit-based center, which follows a $100,000 donation that was made by Ford just last year.

Ford, along with other sponsors like DTE, General Motors and Toyota, will assist the science center in managing their budget of donations. After the unfortunate incident of closing the doors in 2011, the Michigan Science Center was given a second chance thanks to millions of dollars in philanthropic support from 25 different organizations in December of 2012.

Ford believes strongly in providing engagement and effective educational experiences, especially when it comes to science and technology. STEM education programs are going to continue to be a central focus for the Michigan Science Center, while trying to reach visitors outside of southeast Michigan. The Michigan Science Center is extremely grateful for the donation provided by Ford and their support not only to the science center, but to the local community. 

The Michigan Science Center has seen about 384,000 people walk through their doors since the re-opening. This number includes special events, educational programs and facility rentals. The science center is looking at the donations as an opportunity to be able to reach out and encourage a greater interest in STEM education, create a unique experience for children and their families, and to help boost Detroit and Michigan's economies.

Stern Pinball Creates Three New Mustang-Themed Games

FLUSHING, Mich - Stern Pinball created three new Mustang-themed games that are set to be revealed at the Chicago Auto Show on February 6 and 7th. The Chicago bred company developed the Mustang-inspired games by combining two major elements of 20th century pop culture; the pinball machine and the original pony car.

The three pro-level Mustang-themed games will be introduced this spring with cabinet and backboard artwork which honor 50 years of Mustang. There are several diverse, interactive sections of the playfield and various shots which allow players to go drag racing, rallying, drifting and road racing to get a high score. The game has real Mustang sounds and video displays in the backboard, giving off a similar experience of being in a Mustang.

Stern has been committed to staying true to the original idea of pinball, while simultaneously incorporating modern design and mechanical systems to challenge the players. A premium game offered features the Mustang Boss 303, Boss 351 and Boss 429, PLUS a limited-edition game will be available tributing the 1965 original and all-new Ford Mustang. 

Stern Pinball is one of several companies who have paid tribute to 50 years of Mustang success. Mattel came out with a 50 years of Mustang Hot Wheels collection, Caddyshack with a limited-edition Shelby GT500 Mustang golf car and Berg with the Mustang GT pedal go kart.
