Ford Volunteers Focused on Improving Environment for Ford Accelerated Action Day
FLUSHING, Mich - Ford employees got out of the office and into the community last Thursday and Focused on Improving the Environment for Ford Accelerated Action Day. More than 500 Ford employees volunteered by planting urban vegetable gardens, installing watering systems, constructing storage sheds and landscaping the grounds of various nonprofit organizations around southeast Michigan. Last Thursday was also happened to be World Environment Day, presenting Ford employees with no better time to dedicate their efforts to improving sustainability around the community. The participating agencies shared $46,000 in Ford grants which went towards the purchasing of tools, plants and other supplies needed for the day. Below is the list of the several nonprofit partners in southeast Michigan who received up to $5,000 in grants for the projects:

  • Alternatives for Girls, Detroit – Built garden shed, painted and decorated child care room
  • Arbor Hospice, Ann Arbor – Created self-watering planting areas and prepared gardens
  • Boy Scouts of America, Metamora – Rebuilt yurts and dwelling structure for rustic camping
  • Community Living Centers, Farmington – Painted office
  • Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Highland Park – Installed drip irrigation system and planted urban garden
  • Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak – Transformed Great Apes habitat entrance into story circle
  • Habitat Macomb, Mt. Clemens – Constructed sheds, picnic table and paint restore
  • Habitat Monroe, Monroe – Landscaped three new homes
  • Haven, Pontiac – Removed carpet and prepared for new carpet installation
  • Henry Ford Estate, Dearborn – Planted native trees and installed garden benches
  • International Wildlife Refuge, Grosse Ile – Built accessible overlook deck
  • Liberty Hill Housing Corp., Detroit and Westland – Landscaped and cleaned up yards
  • Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Taylor – Rehab privacy fence and play equipment
  • Starfish Family Services, Inkster – Host year end celebration for students and families
  • St. Vincent de Paul, Detroit – Installed bookcases and slat walls at thrift store
  • Vista Maria, Dearborn Heights – Planted trees and landscaped campus

  • Ford Volunteers also Focused on Improving the Environment for Ford Accelerated Action Day by teaming up with Ford Green IT to collect unused computers, printers and other electronic equipment to be recycled. Around 63,000 pounds of e-waste were kept out of landfills thanks to last year's collections. We are looking forward to hearing the total for this year!
