Ford Unveils Technology That Parks Cars and Avoids Obstacles

FLUSHING, Mich. - While the world has been talking about self-driving cars, Ford has unveiled a technology that parks cars and avoids obstacles - by itself. These driving technologies are the Fully Assisted Parking Aid and Obstacle Avoidance.

The Fully Assisted Parking Aid is just the obvious next step up from the Active Park Assist, which controls the steering wheel of a parking vehicle while the driver controls the gas and brakes.  The Fully Assisted Parking Aid takes it a step further by taking full control of your vehicle. First, your vehicle uses ultrasonic sensors to scan for an open parking space at speeds as high as 18 mph. When it finds a spot, it alerts the driver early enough for them to come to a safe and complete stop. The driver then puts the vehicle in neutral and presses a parking button. After the button is pushed, the car will automatically switch gears, accelerate, steer, and brake.

The best part about this Fully Assisted Parking Aid is that you don't even have to be in the vehicle to park it! While you're more than welcome to sit in the driver's seat while your vehicle navigates itself into a spot, you can also step outside the vehicle and press the parking button on a keyfob or remote. This technology works for both perpendicular and angled parking.

As for Obstacle Avoidance, sensors on the vehicle will direct the steering and brakes to avoid hitting cars and/or people that are stopped or slowing ahead of you. First, your vehicle will warn you with a chime. If you don't slow down or come to a stop, your vehicle will assume control of itself, scan the roadway for clearance on the left and right side of your vehicle, and either brake or move the car to the side. The sensors that are used to control your vehicle when an obstacle presents itself are the three radar unit sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and a camera that can scan as far as 600 feet - that's about 3 football fields!

Ford has unveiled technology that parks cars and avoids obstacles, but these great features aren't available on Ford vehicles just yet.
